FABIAN Barbiero admits he could not have chosen a more perfect time to unleash the best and most valuable goal of his career.
Barbiero's 25th minute cracker from outside the penalty area screamed past Queensland Roar goalkeeper Liam Reddy into the top left hand corner of the net.
It not only secured a place in the A-League grand final, it also secured a potentially lucrative spot in the Asian Champions League.
Barbiero certainly won't forget the goal in a hurry, not that he intends to. He said: "I think Craig Moore got the head to it and I sort of anticipated it, it spilt to me, I took a touch and hit it and as soon as it left my boot I knew it was going in.
"I reckon it was (the best goal he has ever scored) and the most important one to, as it got us into the Asian Champions League and now into the Grand Final."
With United aiming for their first A-League finals victory in 10 attempts as they lined up to face Queensland, Barbiero said the playing group wanted to show the Australian football public that The Reds did deserve a berth in the season decider.
He said: "The boys just wanted to come out firing and prove that we are good enough to reach the Grand Final."
It was the 24 year-old's second goal this season, his first back in Round 19 against the Newcastle Jets another one for the highlight reel as he smashed it into the roof of the net from an acute angle.
Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz, who won the Goal of the Year for his strike against Melbourne Victory in Round 13, could be excused for feeling somewhat lucky Barbiero did not score his goal in the Minor Round as it would have certainly been a contender, especially if Barbiero's father had any say in it.
"I think my Dad was impressed, he was up early this morning watching it so he was pretty proud," Barbiero said.
