BOTTOM placed Fawkner posted its first win of the season in a five-goal thriller away to Heidelberg United on Sunday.
The much needed points tasted all the sweeter for The Blues as they came back from a goal down and weathered a late storm from the Bergers to hold on for the win.
The home side dominated the first half, with Fawkner camped in its own half with its opponent playing some attractive passing football and controlled the tempo in the midfield.
Heidelberg United captain Eric Vassiliadis opened the scoring 12 minutes after a long throw fell to his feet inside the six yard box, and he poked past an exposed Pasi Schwalger from close range.
The home side failed to capitalise further on their monopoly on possession and were made to pay just before half time.
Joseph Youseff split the defence in two with a sensational long ball that Zia Younan lashed home to level proceedings and send the Blues into the sheds at half time with their tails up.
Heidelberg United struggled to find its rhythm after the break, and things didn’t get any better when defender Peter Roberts was carried off on a stretcher with a serious leg injury.
After losing Roberts, Heidelberg’s defence looked shaky and Fikret Husanovic made them pay as he placed a low drive inside the far post to put the Blues in front in the 75th minute.
Heidelberg were forced to chase the game and looked vulnerable on the counter attack as it struggled to break through Fawkner’s rear guard, despite committing more and more numbers forward.
On 80 minutes, the Blues won possession and charged up the pitch through Yannis Galanos, who was cut down by a rash tackle from Robert Liparoti inside the box.
Husanovic stepped up and squeezed his spot kick past Peter Galavas to notch up his second for the day.
With time running out and a two goal deficit to overcome, Heidelberg threw everything at Fawkner in the closing stages and pulled one back in the 88th minute.
Daniel Jones rounded the keeper and scored, despite some desperate last ditch defending from Fawkner.
The lengthy amount of injury time gave Heidelberg a chance to level the scores and it could have snatched a point deep in stoppage time.
Tim Paton was put through on goal, but Schwalger made a blinding reflex save to secure all three points for the visitors.
