Almost 20 goals this season is a testament to the former A-League playmaker’s powers.

An ACL injury would’ve ended most players’ seasons.

In fact, this is Smith’s last season.

The 34-year-old former Phoenix, Sydney Olympic and Malaysian Super League mid will transition full-time into coaching at season’s end.

But for now, he’s hoping for a fairytale finish in the FFA Cup with the rampaging red and whites.

A mix of youth and experience, well managed by the rising star of Aussie coaching Ben Cahn and with proper active support, the Goodwin Park outfit loom as the NPL side to watch in the Round of 16.

Olympic progressed on the back of an eye-catching 5-2 rolling of WA outfit Baysie in the Round of 32.

Assist-King Smith and hat-trick hero Chris Lucas were in smashing form on a night when Olympic laid down a marker.

“We always believe we can score. No matter the opposition, there are always goals in us,” Smith told FTBL.

“Players like myself and Matt Mundy can guide the young players through the big games. The youth can do all the running!

Olympic FC celebrate their FFA Cup win

“In all seriousness, we have some really talented young boys who are good enough for the next level.

“Our coaching staff works harder than anyone in the NPL. I’ve been around the NPL a while, and I’ve never seen the attention to detail that Ben and our staff put into the preparation.”

If you’re a neutral, Olympic FC is your team to support in this FFA Cup year.

Fabulous to watch, backed by a red and white army of active fans, and a team with a genuine desire to press, attack and win games. It’s like watching an Ange Postecoglou side.

If they draw a home Round of 16 tie, Goodwin Park will be rocking.

“We’ve had brilliant support from the Olympic community who are behind the team every week," coach Cahn tells FTBL.

“Any home tie is a real advantage for us. Our support is unlike any other that I’ve seen at NPL level,”

And if the FFA Cup is all about fairytales, then Olympic and Smith with his knackered knee could provide a fabulous yarn filed under “The Magic of the Cup”.

It's why we love the Cup in Australia.

“It’s my last season playing competitively,” added Smith with a wry smile.

“And the universe loves a fairytale ending…”
