Fremantle Spirit (1) vs. Cockburn City (1)
Fremantle Spirit and Cockburn City fought out an entertaining 1-1 draw in the southern suburbs derby of round seven of the Football West State Premier League at the Spanish Club this afternoon.
A drab first half gave way to an end to end attacking affair in the second as referee Angelo Nardi handed out three penalties, two of which were converted.
Cockburn were the first to benefit on 66 minutes after striker Dean Wallace was fouled just inside the area following a run from the influential Jason Dos Santos which saw him beat four defenders before a great block by Spirit keeper Stephen Grant pushed the ball wide where Wallace was fouled. Dos Santos stepped up to take the penalty but saw his low effort rebound off the post to Michael Mirco whose first time effort went across goal and off the other upright.
Before Cockburn had a chance to curse their luck, the ball was at the other end of the ground and Nardi pointed to the spot for the second time in two minutes after the fantastic Shane Nunes had a cross from substitute Callum Roberts smack into his hand from close range. Spirit Captain Dale Wingell stepped up and showed how to take a penalty with a calm finish high into the net with Dino Pacella going the wrong way.
But just as Freo were heading towards another famous victory the third penalty of the day was awarded after a long free kick from the Cockburn half was flicked on into the box where Spirit veteran Alex Christie handled the ball just inside the area. John Mirco confidently grabbed the ball and fired it high into the net to level the game and give both sides a share of the points with only four minutes left to play.
It was a listless first half from both sides with possession frequently turned over and chances at a premium. Fremantle’s best chance fell to last week’s goal scoring hero Sebastian Booysen but his flick from six yards flew past the upright after a short corner routine caught the Cockburn defence napping.
On the stroke of half time Cockburn should have taken the lead after Dos Santos played a delightful ball on the counter through to substitute Marco Aleksic, on for the injured Josh Kamasz, but with only the keeper to beat rolled his shot past the post under pressure from the recovering defender.
Cockburn dominated the early stages of the second half with Grant called on to make a smart block from John Mirco five minutes after the restart. Moments later and great interplay down the Cockburn left between John Mirco, Dos Santos and Aleksic saw the latter curl in a back post cross where the unmarked Dean Wallace controlled but blazed his second touch over the bar from four yards with the keeper scrambling.
At the other end Wingell headed into the side netting after a speculative deep cross from Simon Elton-Bott found his captain before Angelo Nardi awarded the game changing penalties. Fremantle could have wrapped up the points on the 80 minute but Jason Barrera’s effort was brilliantly deflected wide by Pacella before the same player had a stinging volley parried wide only minutes later. Cockburn however never gave up and got a deserved goal five minutes before time after Mirco’s penalty found the net.

Perth Soccer Club (3) vs. Inglewood United (2)
A late winner from striker Barry Wood gifted Perth Soccer Club a dramatic 3-2 victory over a gallant Inglewood United at Dorrien Gardens today in round seven of the Football West Premier League. In an exciting encounter, it was Wood’s 83rd minute goal which separated the two teams after Daniel Neiderberger twice pegged back the deficit for the visitors.
Inglewood started the match brightly and almost took the lead when Kevin Griffiths hit a sweet strike at goal following a deep corner but the reliable Gareth Deeg swatted away the stinging effort. United applied the pressure in the opening stanza limiting Perth from their regular free flowing football, in what became an error riddled first half.
The visitors were dealt a blow on the half hour mark when pacey striker Albert Osei Tu-Tu succumbed to what appeared to be a hamstring injury. To make matters worse for Inglewood, Perth were awarded a penalty after Sadmir Jakupovic brought down Barry Wood in the box, captain Robbie Puca stepped up to the spot to give the home side the lead.
After taking a one goal advantage into the break, Perth could have had another two minutes into the second half when confusion in the Inglewood penalty box saw defender Trent Kay’s bobbled effort bounce off the base of the post. A minute later Inglewood was level earning a penalty of their own when Gareth Deeg’s punch bounced off the hand off Michael Ord, Neiderberger coolly slotted past Deeg to tie scores up.
Bobby Despotovski’s side was playing with enormous character with Jason Colli leading the way with his constant presence down the right flank.
It was Despotovski’s former Glory team mate Nikita Rukavytsya who gave Perth the lead, receiving the ball on the edge of the box the A-League bound star rifled his shot into the net with Oliver Taseski plummeted to the spot. Inglewood continued to show fight though and with ten minutes remaining they were level again, Daniel Niederberger pushed forward before placing his shot into the bottom corner of the net to send the visiting fans into jubilation.
With the game see-sawing all afternoon, Barry Wood finally settled the match catching out a hesitant Inglewood defence before flicking past Taseski to clinch victory for Perth. Wood could have finished with a hat-trick in the final stages but was unable to find the target.
Inglewood was desperately unlucky to not come away with a point and will take plenty of confidence into next weekend’s Soccer Pools Cup battle against Fremantle Spirit, while Perth will be overwhelming favourites to advance when they host a struggling Sorrento.
