Mandurah City (4) vs. ECU Joondalup (3)

Mandurah City’s Division One team qualified for the quarter final of the Soccer Pools Cup today beating ECU Joondalup in extra time (4 – 3).

In a game that drew a huge crowd to Mandurah’s new home, Hyundai Stadium, Mandurah and ECU stood toe to toe for the full 90-minutes. The game was fast but even throughout with early chances for both teams, although Mandurah seemed to settle first, scoring at the 16minute mark when Shane Crampton managed to pass three ECU defenders and hit the back of the net for his first of his hat trick.

Mandurah’s next two came fast although both were disallowed due to offside. An injury to the ECU keeper at the 25minute mark saw them force a change and as the game progressed, a back and forth rhythm unfurled. Both teams had wasted opportunities and some very close calls, but neither managed to add to the score in the first half.

The beginning of the second saw ECU score the equalizer at 50 minutes with a kick from outside the box which went sailing passed the Mandurah keeper. ECU continued their run temporarily taking the lead at the 70minute mark as Mandurah’s keeper came out to defend, getting caught between his own defenders. Tempers hit boiling point midway through the second after an ECU striker kicked while Mandurah’s keeper was on the ground, already with the ball.

Mandurah’s equalizer came just before the full time whistle as Crampton somehow managed to find space through the ECU defense, bouncing his kick over the head of the Joondalup keeper. With the score locked at 2 all, extra time seemed the order of the day and ECU wasted no time placing a score inside the first minute. Mandurah were determined to reply but their first few tries were denied. Mandurah eventually managed the answer 10minutes in when a corner from Jordan Rhodes found big man Christian Paschewicz, who made no mistake. At the change of ends all scores were still tied 3 all and with the crowds hearts in their mouths both teams had opportunities that nearly caused them to choke. For the next 13minuted the crowd waited, on the edge of their seats, for an outcome that wouldn’t involve penalties. Mandurah provided that outcome with Crampton deservingly scoring the sealer off a beautiful cross from Paschewicz. With the home crowd willing the whistle, Mandurah run out the day 4 – 3 winners and making it through to the next round.

The Division One team was not the only ones who flew the flag for Mandurah on the day with the Reserves also bringing home a win. Mandurah started promisingly, passing well and seemingly confident. ECU soon dented that confidence, scoring inside the first two minutes, leaving the home side shocked. ECU continued to dominate the play from that moment for majority of the first half. The ECU defence was all over Mandurah and no matter what they tried the home side just could not get passed. At the opposite end the Mandurah defence was working overtime to ensure the Joondalup didn’t get the chance to run away with the game. ECU were sharp and crisp with their game and were disallowed their second right before the half time whistle. The second half started in a flurry of close attempts from both teams but it was Mandurah’s Jake Loreto who managed to score running onto a great pass from Mikel Sesma. ECU continued to push forward but Mandurah managed to hold their own. It was Loreto who scored again midway through the second, after Stu McCall managed to draw the ECU keeper and slip a pass through, giving Mandurah the lead. A third goal wasn’t to be despite Mandurah coming so close it hurt, but all were happy with a 2 – 1 win and qualifier.

Mandurah’s Under 18’s took on the NTC team and it was obvious in the end why these boys are the National squad. In a game that started tight, inaccuracy was the problem for both teams early. NTC’s ball skills were impressive as they had Mandurah on the back foot. When they eventually settled Mandurah were the first to post a score Sean Dash slotting one at the 25minute mark. NTC wasted no time replying five minutes later and the half was played out with consistent effort from both teams. In the second half, NTC just slipped away from the home side. Their second came from some beautiful footwork by their entire forward line, as they managed to slip one passed Mandurah’s keeper and their third followed soon after as Mandurah’s keeper came out to defend and slipped. With Mandurah clearly frustrated things started to get physical but that soon subsided as NTC scored their fourth and final goal of the day late in the second half, taking the game 4 – 1.

Perth Soccer Club (4) vs. Sorrento (0)

It was a tale of two halves at Dorrien Gardens as Perth SC stumbled in the first half but confirmed their superiority with a hard earned 4-0 victory. Nikita Rukavystya had a swag of chances in the first half, with Todd Howarth excellently stamping his ownership on the left flank. Circati showed that age was no bounds, holding back Jared Love who looked keen for goals. Sorrento put up a sound first half performance in the rearguard.

Half-time came, and with Jamie Harnwell looking on, could the Sorrento boys produce an equal second half performance for their former icon and WA football stalwart. Unfortunately just nine minutes into the second half, a defensive lapse allowed Rukavystya time and space and he made Sorrento pay with a shot into the bottom left hand side of the goal. Rukavystya again peppered the goal with shots but it would not be until the 63rd Minute when Rukavystya broke that the goals would flood open.

Rukavystya stormed into the box and was brought down by Sorrento goalkeeper and captain Neil Jones. Jones however, in a moment of madness threw the ball at the injured Rukavystya as he writhed in pain on the ground earning him a red card and an early bath for dissent. Robbie Puca then slotted it to the right of reserve keeper Cochrane, and the scoreboard read 2-0.

Wood made it 3-0 with about fifteen minutes to go, with a great striking shot from outside the box leaving Cochrane stranded. And in injury time, Gary Faria completed the rout with a chip over the keeper, after breaking free of the Sorrento defence.
