FORMER Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has touched down in Townsville for talks with North Queensland Fury about a possible deal which would see him become marquee.
Fowler stunned locals when he made his low-key arrival on Friday, four days earlier than expected.
But it came as no surprise to North Queensland Fury management with chief executive Dean Hassall and media manager Brett Judge there to meet the man known to Liverpool fans as ‘God’.
Fowler refused to speak to the media on the way to his hotel after the long trip from the UK to Australia left him exhausted.
His early arrival was a positive for the club, according to coach Ian Ferguson who is on his way back to town after a brief holiday.
"I think it was serious from the minute I first spoke to him," he said. "For him to travel halfway across the world there definitely has got to be a seriousness so hopefully we'll get him over the line."
North Queensland Fury officials will spend the next few days showing Robbie Fowler around town with Ian Ferguson keen to impress the 33-year-old.
"I know Robbie, I've met him a couple of times socially and I know what kind of guy he is anyway," he said. "He is very humbled and very honoured with what he has done in the game, that's the sort of guy he is.
"I want him to get a feel for the city and a look into the lifestyle."
He added: "I also want him to see the training facilities, have a look at where we are playing, the gym, the pools and meet a few people as well so it's going to be quite busy over the next few days."
After of which talks will move to the boardroom with an offer likely to see Fowler become the highest paid sportsman in the region.
"At the end of the day we won't mention money yet, we'll do all this before and then take it from there," Ferguson said.
"First and foremost, we want him to see if he likes it, if his family will like it and if everything goes well, we'll sit down and discuss that."
