The French players involved in the World Cup have waived their right to three million euros in bonuses they were entitled to despite a dismal performance in South Africa.

The money will instead be used to bolster grass-roots and amateur football in France.

The problem was finally thrashed out in a meeting between French Football Federation president Fernand Duchaussoy and the players yesterday evening.

Duchaussoy said: "There has been lots of erroneous information coming out but last night we met with the players to put things right.

"The players have confirmed that they are willing to give up any bonuses from partners and sponsors from the World Cup and the warm-up games which amounts to the sum of three million euros.

"This amount will be given in its entirety to grass-roots and amateur football in France."

Duchaussoy added: "I have been personally involved after having chats and group discussions with the players concerned.

"This has never been a major problem. The only problem has been the lack of a precise clarity and false information flying around in the media.

"I have spoken to the players in the World Cup who weren't here by telephone and we have cleared the air with the players who were here last night in the meeting.

"We think it is the right thing to do. It is for an appropriate cause.

"I would say that the subject is now closed and we can now concentrate on this fantastic game at Wembley tomorrow night."

France skipper Alou Diarra said: "We feel that the right decision has been made and we felt it was the most logical solution.

"We have spoken about and we have come to an agreement that we are all happy with."

Chelsea winger Florent Malouda said: "It is a good thing. It is good to put an end to it.

"We can think about the future now."

France were eliminated in the first round of the World Cup.

The players went on strike to support Nicolas Anelka after the striker was kicked out of the squad for remarks made about coach Raymond Domenech.
