EXCLUSIVE: Former Fury winger Fred Agius has returned to South Australia to play with Adelaide City but continues to wait on North Queensland to appoint a new coach.
Agius's contract has expired with the north Queensland club but the 26-year-old remains hopeful that he'll once again wear the green shirt of the Townsville-based club.
The problem is, with 11 weeks to go before Fury play their opening A-League clash against Robbie Fowler's Perth Glory on August 6, the club still has no coach.
Assistant coach Stuart McLaren has been appointed and it would appear he will take the club's existing squad of around 11 players until further notice.
"For sure I still want to play but I've had trouble getting in contact with the club [Fury]," said Agius.
"I actually spoke with Robbie Fowler this morning and he was having a bit of trouble getting in touch with the boys up there as well."
It was an up-and-down season for Agius. He started most of the pre-season games but fell out of favour with coach Ian Ferguson when the season commenced.
"It was pretty disappointing," he said. "I thought I'd worked my way into the squad but it didn't eventuate. I think they wanted to go with more experienced players."
However, despite his disappointment, Agius senses the future could be brighter. And in David Williams, Agius said they have a player who can lead them to glory.
Agius added: "It can only grow up there, it's just a matter of keeping the team alive up there and the supporters will come.
"And the players were getting out into the community - the boys went as far as Mt Isa. David is certainly a player you can build a team around him.
"With him already signed he can really become a crowd favourite."
