ADELAIDE United FC is set to become the A-League’s Friday night specialists after the FFA released the official 2009/10 season draw earlier today.
The Reds will play 11 of their 14 home matches, and 14 in total, on Friday nights, with the club's remaining home fixtures set for a Labour Day clash against Newcastle Jets, Tuesday night encounter against Perth Glory on January 10 and Saturday night game against Queensland Roar in the penultimate round of the season.
Adelaide United will open its 2009/10 campaign at home against Perth Glory, the match scheduled for Friday 7 August 2009, before the Reds head to Sydney to take on Sydney FC the following Sunday.
Adelaide United supporters will then get a close look at the league's new boys, with the Reds to host Gold Coast United and the North Queensland Fury on consecutive Friday nights in Rounds 3 and 4.
With the Fury set to play in Adelaide once, the August 28 encounter will be the only chance for South Australian football fans to see North Queensland's marquee signing and former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler live in action.
Another date to mark in the calendar is Friday 18 September as United and rivals Melbourne Victory feature in a grand final rematch, the Round 7 blockbuster at Hindmarsh Stadium the only visit the 2008/09 champions will make to Adelaide with the two corresponding fixtures both in Melbourne.
Having a majority of Friday night games at home, Reds Coach Aurelio Vidmar hopes his squad can use it to their favour throughout the season.
"With a host of Friday night games at home, hopefully we can get plenty of support and have some big crowds turning out in what shapes as the toughest and most competitive season of the Hyundai A-League so far," Vidmar said.
"Historically, Friday night games have been popular with our supporters and I think with the exciting squad that we're putting together and with a bit of luck, we can make Hindmarsh Stadium a real fortress and take advantage from playing at a regular time at our home ground."
United play five of their first seven games at home, while the run into the finals has the Reds at Hindmarsh Stadium for just two of their last seven encounters, and Vidmar believes it will be crucial to get off to a good start.
"With a number of games at home towards the start of the season, it will be really important that we get off to a good start and put some points on the board early because it's difficult to chase points towards the end of the season," Vidmar said.
"The history of the Hyundai A-League has shown that there are no games that you can look at and say that it is a guaranteed three points. It will be a tough last two months coming into the finals and the ACL campaign and while it's a big challenge, it's one we're looking forward to."
