NORTH Queensland Fury departed Townsville this lunchtime knowing they face one of the toughest challenges in the Hyundai A-League thus far this season, when they play a Brisbane Roar side who are not only top-of-the-table but on a record run of form.
After a hectic period of fixtures during late October/early November, the Fury squad have had ten days off to prepare for this crucial encounter against their Queensland rivals.
This season's Fury squad have five players who have previously played for the Roar, not including assistant coach, Stuart McLaren.
McLaren explained that this history will certainly add to the occasion, saying: "If you can't get up for a game like this one, then you never will.
"It's a fantastic stadium, we are obviously desperate for the points and we have a couple of players in the squad that have a bit of a point to prove coming up against their old club."
Unfortunately for Chris Grossman and Matthew Ham, they miss out on this opportunity via injury but for Isaka Cernak, David Williams and Brad McDonald this match has added significance.
Fury welcome back to the fold injured defenders, Simon Storey (lower back) and Andre Kilian (hamstring) for this match, whilst Jack Hingert has also been promoted back to the 15-man squad.
Missing from the club's last match against Melbourne Heart is Dyron Daal whose knee has not recovered from a nasty tackle towards the end of the match.
When asked by the media at the airport if the side miss the experience of Daal, McLaren answered; "We would have loved to able to call upon Dyron this week, because he brings a lot of attacking quality to the side which we thought could cause the Brisbane back four some problems.
"But a few other players in the squad have to take some responsibility.
"Jason Spagnuolo has had a call-up for this match and hasn't contributed a lot this year.
"Jason has been desperate to get a chance and that chance could come this week just as it did for Panny Nikas last week."
Although their performances don't warrant their position, the Townsville-based side are currently sitting bottom of the table which is something the coaching and playing staff hope to change sooner rather than later; "We can talk about missed opportunities, we can talk about games in hand and everything else that like, but the bottom line is that we have to start picking up points because we are bottom and no one likes to be in that position.
"But more than that, we have a goal this season of competing in the finals, and if we don't start picking up points, we will lose touch with the others" concluded McLaren.
One of the Fury's leading lights again this season has been David Williams, who is returning to his home town of Brisbane for this tricky fixture; "This is definitely one of the toughest matches in the League, but probably the most exciting for us. It will be a big occasion for them trying to maintain their unbeaten record at home and for us to try and start climbing the ladder."
Commenting on if he (Williams) will be targeted by former representative coach, Ange Postecoglou, David responded; "I don't think he targets anyone. He is a very smart coach who has his tactics and keeps focused on that, with each players doing what is asked of them, which is reflected in their table position."
Whatever the result on Saturday night, it is guaranteed to be a cracker of a contest between two of the League's most exciting teams.
