"We are gutted, I thought the team worked hard as a unit and it was a team performance we worked during the week, it just sort of rips your heart out," McBreen said.

"I thought we got enough to try and get something out of the game and after all a draw would have been a better result. But unfortunately Melbourne is a quality side and absorbed the pressure and got on the park and scored a goal."

Fury coach Ian Ferguson praised his troops' effort, but was still disappointed with giving away what he termed a silly goal.

"The most pleasing thing for me I can work with the nucleus of this team with we had today and hopefully we can get that cohesion and togetherness and get that balance right," Ferguson said.

"I like us to be competitive and I think tonight we were I felt that the boys for 70 minutes they really were in the game."
