NORTH Queensland Fury have today embarked on a challenging road trip which will see them play Wellington Phoenix, Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners in the space of eight days.
Due to the geographical location of Townsville, the squad departed the Tropics at 2.30pm today and won't arrive into Wellington until midnight (local time) - making it one of the longest trips in the Hyundai A-League.
Fury head coach, Franz Straka has named a 16-man squad for the club's first match against Wellington on Friday night, which is the same 15 who faced Melbourne Victory last Saturday in Townsville plus defender Brett Studman.
Still missing for the North Queensland outfit are dynamic duo Chris Payne and Isaka Cernak (national team duties), Dyron Daal (hamstring), Adam Casey (calf tear) and Andre Kilian (foot injury).
However, Ugandan international, Eugene Sseppuya did not travel with the rest of the Fury squad to Wellington due to a problem with his visa.
The Club is currently seeking advice on the situation and will know in the next 24-hours as to whether it will be possible for Eugene to travel to New Zealand in time for Friday's Hyundai A-League match.
Dyron Daal and Andre Kilian will travel to Sydney on Saturday to join up with the above squad, whilst Payne and Cernak arrive into Sydney on Sunday as the Fury base themselves in the NSW capital for the matches against the defender Champions and the high-flying Mariners.
The Phoenix have a formidable record at home and have been undefeated for the past 22 matches. But records are there to be broken and Franz Straka is confident that his men can secure the win their recent performances deserve.
"We approach every match believing we can win," he said. "If we continue to play our style of football and stick to our game plan, then I see no reason why we can't be the first team to record a win in Wellington for some time.
"We will again be missing important players on Friday night but we showed last week against the Victory that we have depth in our squad to cover these eventualities.
"Our defence was excellent, keeping our first clean sheet of the season and we created numerous scoring chances, the challenge now is to convert these opportunities into goals."
Commenting on the three-match road trip, Straka continued by saying; "It will be difficult but all Clubs will face this scenario during the season. We have several players in our team who have European experience where it's common to play multiple matches in a short space of time.
"Whilst other players are young and athletic, which will hopefully help in terms of the recovery time and fatigue management.
"Having said that, these are three excellent teams and we will have to perform at our best to come away with the points we know we need to keep our Finals goal on track."
