A report in the Sydney media yesterday suggested the former Liverpool striker was carrying a bit of extra baggage but Fury chairman Don Matheson has wasted no time in hitting back.

He told the Townsville Bulletin: "They have got a clever little shot showing him probably a little bit heavier than he really is, but the truth is those who know him know he's an athlete.

"He's got more knowledge about his body and his preparation than anyone in this country and we know for fact that he's going to be right."

Fowler arrived in Townsville well ahead of pre-season training and has been under the close supervision of the club's medical and strength and conditioning staff.

Matheson is confident that come the big kick off in early August, Fowler will be in peak condition to make an impact.

"There's absolutely no issues about his fitness," said the Fury chief.

Meanwhile, Fury are in discussions over a pre-season clash against Gold Coast United to be played in Cairns in June.
