The former Swindon Town and Carlisle United midfielder has been brought in as an injury replacement for Scott Wilson.

Smith, the son of former Brighton and Hove Albion player Gordon Smith, and Beau Busch have been added to the squad to cover for more bad luck on the injury front. David Williams is the latest victim of Fury's injury curse. He will be out for more than a month with a hamstring tear.

Adding to coach Ian Ferguson's woes is the fact that Rostyn Griffiths is suspended for one week after picking up his fifth yellow card in Wednesday night's 2-0 loss to Brisbane Roar.

"The last time we went down there (to Newcastle) we got done 2-0," Ferguson said. "It's another chance for us to get some points and stay off the bottom of the ladder.

"Newcastle are the form team of the competition but I'd like to think the boys can bounce back and take some points. We've done it before.

"Our away form was pretty good at the start of the season and we had a bit of a dip and we need to get that form back where we are playing good football, creating chances and we need to get on now and do that."

Ferguson doesn't expect Smith and Busch to perform miracles if called upon against Newcastle.

All the Fury coach asks for is that all his re-jigged squad put in a solid shift and do their best to eliminate the sorts of silly mistakes that cost the side two goals in Brisbane.

"I'm going to have to changes things structurally and tactically. I've no choice," Ferguson added. "We haven't finished looking at how that will look yet because these changes have been forced upon us.

"We'll have fresh faces and fresh legs so hopefully that will give us a fresh start when we play Newcastle."
