SCOTTISH club Dumfermline’s captain Scott Wilson has agreed to join North Queensland Fury for the next two A-League seasons.
North Queensland Fury FC coach Ian Ferguson said he was looking forward to having the Dunfermline Athletic defender on the park alongside marquee player Robbie Fowler, overseas players Felipe, Jeremy Brockie and James Robinson as well as the Australian contingent.
“I’m trying to build a team with experience and young legs and Scott was in my thoughts right from the start,” Ferguson said. “When I was getting players on board, it kept coming back to me that a player like Scott would be a good fit.
“I think he’s the best in the Scottish League at the moment and he’ll certainly bring a lot to the team with the experience he’s got.”
Wilson and Ferguson’s paths first crossed at Glasgow Rangers when in 1993 when the then 16-year-old signed on from the cub’s youth system.
“He was only a young boy then coming through the ranks but he played a lot of Premier league games for them,” Ferguson said. “He’s only 31 now so he’s probably got three or four good seasons to play.”
Ferguson believes Wilson’s leadership qualities from the back will benefit the team as much as his uncompromising defence.
“He’ll let the other boys know if something isn’t right,” the coach said. “Scott brings us another leader - someone who can help bring some of the younger ones through.”
North Queensland Fury FC CEO Dean Hassall said Wilson provided one of the final pieces of the puzzle in the development of a very competitive squad.
“Scott is extremely well regarded at Dunfermline and they are very sorry that he’s leaving,” Hassall said. “He will certainly bring toughness and experience to our squad and he’s another player people will want to watch.”
