EXCLUSIVE: After months of negotiations, North Queensland Fury could unveil Czech-born coach Franz Straka as their new coach today.
Straka has reportedly told Czech media that he's accepted the position of coach in Townsville on a one-year deal.
It's understood Straka had spoken with Sydney FC's Vitezslav Lavicka about working in Australia's A-League although Lavicka has yet to be quizzed on that.
Frantisek "Franz" Straka has enjoyed a varied career. The 52-year-old played seven years in the Czechoslovakian national team up to and including the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
The defender, then on the books at Borussia Moenchengladbach, was a national teammate of Ivan Hasek - who later became boss of the Czech FA and who fired Straka after one game in 2009.
Straka played in both the round of 16 victory against Costa Rica and in the quarter final before the Czechs bowed out to eventual winner Germany 1-0.
Straka began his coaching career in 1999 with a lower league German club called Wuppertaler.
Since then, he's managed clubs in Germany, Greece and Czech Republic. He took the Czech national team for one game in 2009 - a 1-0 win over Malta - before he was fired by Hasek.
Straka is also said to be fluent in German and is likely to be the man behind the signing of Schalke fringe player Andre Kilian.
Straka also coached Lavicka's former club Sparta Prague in 2004. His last club was Slovak side MFK Ruzomberok.
It's understood Straka's family will join him and his daughter will also study at University in Australia.
