ADELAIDE United new boy Iain Fyfe is hoping to join the growing list of Reds earning a call from Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek.
Adelaide's performances at home and abroad last season saw half a dozen players earn international spots, including the likes of Scott Jamieson and Eugene Galekovic.
Fyfe says his focus is firmly on helping the Reds to success but if his contribution then leads to a green and gold stint, he won't be complaining.
Having been signed by The Reds on a three-year deal prior to the end of the last A-League season after four years at Sydney FC, Fyfe has returned to Adelaide to bring an experienced and influential presence to United's defence.
"It feels great to be back, as this is where I was brought up," said Fyfe.
"I had a good stint in Sydney, I enjoyed my time and my football there, but ultimately when the opportunity came up to come back here I jumped at it. It was great to come back amongst family, friends, and also amongst Viddie (Aurelio Vidmar) and some of the other coaches that I used to play with, so it's a good environment for me."
Vidmar and Fyfe were teammates at Adelaide City and while the association between the two is now somewhat different with Vidmar pulling the strings as coach, Fyfe is excited about playing under the guidance of the Australian football icon.
"Obviously it's a little bit different. He has to go into that coach role now so it's a bit different from when he was a teammate, but Viddie has always been a great bloke and what he's been able to do as a coach in forming this team into a title contender, was another reason that I came here," Fyfe said.
Fyfe also cannot wait to start playing regularly again at Hindmarsh Stadium, particularly in front of big crowds that were dwindling in comparison, during his time with Adelaide City.
"Adelaide fans have always been passionate about all sports but especially soccer. Everyone has got behind the club and even when I was watching from Sydney, it was great to see the passion of the fans and to see 15,000 coming through the gates at Hindmarsh Stadium.
"I remember the days when the crowds were around two to three thousand, so to be able to play in front of 15,000 and see the whole state get behind one team is fantastic," he said.
Ahead of season five Fyfe admits to feeling a high level of expectation coming into a Reds squad, that has lost three of its seasoned campaigners at the back, Sasa Ognenovski, Angelo Costanzo and Michael Valkanis. But while he admits it will be stern test, Fyfe says the current playing group is determined to make sure Adelaide United continues to be one of the leading clubs in the A-League.
"I'm going to enjoy my football, number one, but ultimately we're going to be judged on results as a team and we're going to be judged on not conceding many goals, and with me being the oldest at the back, I'm willing to put my hand up and lead by example," Fyfe said.
"We've lost three experienced defenders in Valkanis, Ognenovski and Costanzo and they were great players, but the club's got to move on and players have got to step up and that's what I'm looking to do.
"The main thing is that we don't drop off the level that the team maintained last year. It's going to be hard with two more teams coming into the league and more games, but we've got great characters here and it's up to us as a team to step up and maintain that level."
The 27 year-old has represented Australia at Under 23, 20 and 17 level, and after seeing up to seven Adelaide United players called up for national camps last season, he says it is an added incentive to aim for.
"It's obviously a goal of mine. First and foremost I want to concentrate on playing good football with Adelaide and getting results.
"I don't want to look too far ahead, so my main goal is to play good football for the fans and hopefully win a league title here. After that, you never know. A lot of boys here played good football, got results and got recognised so I'm looking to go down those same lines," he said.
