ITALY'S World Cup-winning midfielder Gennaro Gattuso believes he has something to prove with the Azzurri after a disappointing campaign at AC Milan.
The 31-year-old is preparing with the rest of his international team-mates for their European opener against Holland on June 9.
Despite making 31 league appearances, Gattuso struggled to make much of an impact this campaign with the Rossoneri, who missed out on a place in next season's Champions League after finishing fifth in Serie A.
"I have been below par this season, I know it," admitted Gattuso. "But now I am wearing the Italy colours and I want to do well and give my all.
"But don't worry, I am still the same player that gets yellow cards and recovers balls. If I am called into action, I will know how to contribute, otherwise I will be able to help off the pitch."
The Italians were impressive in the qualifying campaign, losing just one game while finishing top of their group ahead of France.
And Gattuso admits they would love to follow up their world title with victory at the European Championship.
"The adrenalin is slowly coming out but we must remain calm," he continued. "There is the right spirit in the team and we all want to do well.
"Each of us knows that we must prepare for each game well and that when we go out on the pitch we must be ready to battle.
"The European Championship is a more difficult competition than the World Cup because here you find teams that play very well tactically."
Gattuso also believes that although it will be difficult, Italy will have to overcome the absence of injured captain Fabio Cannavaro.
Cannavaro underwent ankle surgery earlier this week and has been ruled out for the entire tournament.
"We are saddened," Gattuso said. "We have lost our captain, a very important player on and off the pitch, but we have to be strong and look forward."
