EXCLUSIVE: Gary van Egmond is demanding 11 leaders to fight for the collective cause as Newcastle Jets battle to keep their Asian Champions League dreams alive.
The Hunter outfit desperately need a victory against Beijing Guoan on Wednesday night and van Egmond expects each member of his team to take added responsibility in the quest for the points.
Newcastle's preparations have not been helped with a hamstring injury ruling out Fabio Vignaroli of the clash while Ben Kanterovski is suspended.
Ljubo Milicevic returns from suspension though and whatever the XI he selects, van Egmond expects each player to step up to the plate and take responsibility.
When asked if the Beijing clash was 'do or die' van Egmond told au.fourfourtwo.com: "How can I put it? Let's say it's pretty imperative we get the points on Wednesday.
"What I want is to see players out there taking the game by the scruff of the neck. I didn't think we had enough of that in the last ACL game. There might be a few natural leaders but I want 11 leaders out there against Beijing.
"People have to take that responsibility, do their own jobs, help their mates and just battle for the result as a unit. We win together, we lose together."
As for Newcastle's opponents, it is not yet clear how strong a side they will select but van Egmond says any team containing Ryan Griffiths is a threat.
He said: "He is a good player and you should worry about good players. We will need to keep a close eye on him but then you have to respect each opponent. Beijing are a professional outfit and their players will be wanting a result just as we do.
"But we have to focus on the things we can control, focus on our preparation."
Griffiths (Ryan) trained with the Jets before moving to Guoan, just to keep himself ticking over according to van Egmond.
"Look, the money he can command in Europe meant that we were not going to be able to do anything with him," said the Jets coach.
