Ange Postecoglou and Mark Milligan have praised Alex Gersback after the young defender’s star turn against Cameroon.
Gerbsack was Australia’s shining light in the disappointing 1-1 draw with the Indomitable Lions.
Replacing Aziz Behich, the left back was impressive in St Petersburg with several promising attacking forays. It was Gersbach that won the penalty in the second half, which Mark Milligan duly converted, to give the green and gold a share of the spoils.
Postecoglou described the former Sydney FC fullback’s performance as “excellent”.
“We’ve got some good young players coming through,” the Socceroos boss said.
“Alex coped really well. It was his first game for us in a while, against some very good opposition. He’s got a great technique, he’s got great composure, he did well for the penalty. He was good (against Cameroon).”
Gersback was only called into Australia’s Confederations Cup squad at the last minute following an injury to Brad Smith.
Socceroo skipper Milligan also hailed the 20-year old.
“That’s the beauty of being that young as well,” Milligan said.
“He’s told to be nice and aggressive and nice and positive, and Gers just goes and does it. Considering, I think he was on holiday a couple of weeks ago, considering everything, he’s come in and done a wonderful job today.”
