The Socceroos defender came off in the bench in the final minutes as Rosenborg looked to hold on to their 1-0 advantage.

It was a tight game at the Amsterdam Arena, but the deadlock was broken just under 15 minutes from time.

Nigerian winger Samuel Adegbenro came on in the 69th minute and fired home the eventual winner just eight minutes later.

Rosenborg now take a one-goal advantage into the second leg at home next Thursday.

The winner of the tie gets a spot in the group stages of the Europa League tournament.

If Rosenborg make it into the competition, it will give 20-year-old Gersbach more chance of game time, which is crucial especially in a World Cup year.
