EXCLUSIVE: Ten years after their first tour of duty to Sydney, Perth Glory fans will celebrate the milestone this weekend with a packed schedule culminating in Sunday’s game against Sydney FC.
Glory fans have been travelling across the country as an official group since 2000 – and this Sunday at Parramatta Stadium they’ll celebrate their tenth anniversary tour of duty.
It will cap a special four-day trip to the Harbour City that will include Glory fans playing against each other in what they've dubbed the “Kasey Wehrman Cup”, meeting Glory players after the game, honouring tour veterans and raising funds for charity.
Colin Sharland, President of The Shed – Glory’s official supporter group – said this weekend’s trip would attract Glory fans from around the country and is set to be a memorable chapter in their long history.
“The day before the game we’ll play for the Kasey Wehrman trophy. We’ll also have a group dinner where we’ll honour 15 fans that’ve been on every single tour. They’ll be recognised in a special way.
Wehrman was a Glory favourite a decade ago and his legacy remains after he threw his boot into the crowd. It’s now the trophy Glory fans play for and that will be played in a Kings Cross park.
“On Sunday there's the game and drinks at Parramatta Leagues, and on Monday morning we have what’s called Kangaroo Court - a piss-take of all the things people have done wrong or right on the tour with all money raised going to the Leukaemia Foundation.
“We chose that because one of our club members is seriously, seriously ill with Leukaemia,” Sharland added.
Pleasingly, Glory owner Tony Sage will subsidise the cost of this special trip to Sydney. The fans clearly believe Sage and the club understand their importance.
“The club gives us tremendous support in helping us liaise with other clubs and with organising player shirts for raffles and of course things like helping us out for this weekend,” said Sharland.
Glory fans are unique in the A-League in that their history straddles both the NSL and current national competition. What’s more, like the players, they are forced to travel further than any other club to support their club.
Adding to this special day will be Sydney FC’s latest fan promotion. It allows sky blue fans the rare opportunity to have a kick on the Parramatta stadium ground after the game.
Fans can enter the pitch in any of the stadium’s four corners 15 minutes after the conclusion of the match. A siren will sound alerting fans to when they can enter the field.
Sharland added: “I’d like to thank all the fans for travelling over and the club for the tremendous support they’ve given us. It should be a great weekend."
