Perth Glory have signed young state league striker Nikita Rukavytsya in a two-year deal.
The 19-year-old trained with the club for several months last season before playing in the final three rounds of the 2006/07 season.
His tenacity and eye for goal impressed Glory coach Ron Smith who is putting together a new look strike force this season.
“He’s a quality finisher and that’s a very encouraging sign in a young striker, said Smith.
He doesn’t drop his head if he misses a scoring opportunity, he just puts in the hard work to create another chance and more often than not the ball finds itself in the back of the net.”
Perth now has 18 contracted players for the 2007/08 A-League season, 12 of whom are West Australian.
Smith says this is a reflection of the quality of WA talent on offer and the club’s commitment to providing a path for local players to progress to the professional level.
“It’s nice in this day and age to see a fair percentage of your squad representing the state, and whilst that’s not the criteria for selection, if it’s a choice between two players and there skills are comparable them I’d definitely be leaning towards someone from WA,” he said.
