The former Brazil striker has returned to his homeland after 14 years, when he left Cruzeiro to begin his European career at PSV Eindhoven in 1994.

As ongoing knee problems have continued to blight his career in recent years the 32-year-old, released by AC Milan, has been given a lifeline by the resurgent Sao Paulo giants.

"I played only one year in Cruzeiro and I travelled to Europe," he said.

"I was thinking of returning to Brazil. I missed my country and family. Corinthians is a big chance for me, a club with great supporters. This union is going to give great results."

The 32-year-old Rio de Janeiro-born striker continued: "Corinthians are giving me a big chance, opening their doors, and I am going to keep going on my recovery. I am very happy to be in Sao Paulo.

"I have never had any jealousy problem at any club. I am only one more member in the squad, with the same obligations as the rest. I came here because of the marvellous project that Corinthians introduced to me."

However, Timao fans will have to wait to see him make his debut as the 1994 and 2002 World Cup winner is recovering from a knee injury.

"I want to thank everybody, especially the president (Andres Sanchez).

"I am facing a huge challenge. I am sure that working and training hard I will beat it (the injury). It will not be easy, but I am going to make it because of my love for football.

"I cannot say when I am going to make my debut. I have to see my progress in training, only then I will know that. I am following a recovery plan under sun and rain. I am reaching an important phase of recuperation and muscular strengthening."

The former Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan star added in a press conference: "I am sure that my son (Ronald) is happy as his father is playing for Corinthians.

"What I liked the most about coming here is the tranquility that the club is giving to recover (from injury). Now I have to show my football on the field and I am certain that I will do it right."

Ronaldo insists now is not the time to aim for a return to the national team.

"My aim in this return is Corinthians," he said. "The Selecao is only a consequence."

Corinthians president Sanchez commented: "Ronaldo needs the respect and support of the Corinthians nation as he went through a hard 2008.

"Ronaldo and Corinthians need passion and respect."
