ANTONIOS NIKOPOLIDIS (Olympiacos, 14/01/71)

The grey-haired shot-stopper was voted on to the Euro 2004 all-star team after he kept a hat-trick of clean sheets in the knockout stage to lead the Greeks to the title. Following the 4-1 home defeat to Turkey in the Euro 2008 qualifiers, he lost his first-team place and the captaincy to Angelos Basinas, although he has since recovered his berth in goal. He is the fourth most capped Greece player of all time.

KONSTANTINOS CHALKIAS (Aris Salonika, 30/05/74)

Standing at 6ft 6in, the 33-year-old former Portsmouth goalkeeper has had to spend most of his international career on the substitutes' bench behind Nikopolidis. He was unused during Euro 2004, although his hopes of an appearance may be better in Austria and Switzerland after making five starts during the qualifiers.

ALEXANDROS TZORVAS (OFI Crete, 12/08/82)

Has impressed in his first season with the Greek islanders following his transfer from Panathinaikos and was rewarded with his first call-up to the national team for the 2-1 friendly win against Portugal in March.

DEFENDERS

SOTIRIOS KYRGIAKOS (Eintracht Frankfurt, 23/07/79)

The former Rangers defender did not miss a minute of Greece's qualification campaign, highlighted by his brace in the 2-2 away draw against Norway. He missed Euro 2004 because of injury but should provide a key part of the team this summer with his tough tacking and high work-rate a perfect fit for coach Otto Rehhagel's game plan.

GIORGIOS SEITARIDIS (Atletico Madrid, 04/06/81)

The right-back was one of four Greek players selected in the 23-man UEFA all-star team following Euro 2004. Scored his first goal for the national team in the 2-0 home win over Hungary during the Euro 2008 qualifiers. Returned to action with Atletico in March after four months with an Achilles injury.

TRAIANOS DELLAS (AEK Athens, 31/01/76)

Dellas was a rock at the heart of the Greece defence at Euro 2004, earning a place in the all-star team after helping the champions not concede during the knockout stage. A towering presence, he also scored the 'silver goal' in the semi-finals to eliminate the Czech Republic.

SOKRATIS PAPASTATHOPOULOS (AEK Athens, 09/06/88)

One of the rising stars of Greek football, the AEK central defender made his international debut in February's 1-0 friendly win against the Czech Republic. He captained the Greece Under-19s at the 2007 European Championships, but was controversially suspended for the final against Spain after he received his second yellow card of the tournament in the semi-finals. The referee later apologised to the player after video replays indicated he did not deserve to be booked.

NIKOS SPIROPOULOS (Panathinaikos, 10/10/83)

The attack-minded young left-back earned his first international cap in the 5-0 win over Malta during the qualifiers, coming on as a half-time substitute. Transferred to Panathinaikos in the January transfer window and has since cemented a regular starting place.

PARASKEVAS ANTZAS (Olympiacos, 18/08/76)

The centre-back was used sparingly during the qualifiers, however his only start was in arguably the team's most important game away to Turkey when they sealed qualification with a 1-0 win. Antzas won five consecutive Greek championships (1998-2002) with Olympiacos.

LOUKAS VINTRA (Panathinaikos, 05/02/81)

The right-back has established himself as a key figure in the Panathinaikos defence, however he made just two starts for Greece during the qualifiers because of the excellence of Seitaridis. He was born in the Czech town of Alberhiche.

MIDFIELD

ANGELOS BASINAS (Real Mallorca, 03/01/76)

After Basinas was given the captain's armband following the 4-1 home defeat against Turkey, Greece remained unbeaten, winning seven of their last eight games to seal qualification. The 32-year-old's hard-working and combative style epitomised Greece's ascent to the Euro 2004 crown and his corner was headed in by Angelos Charisteas to win the final. Basinas is the team's preferred penalty taker.

GIORGIOS KARAGOUNIS (Panathinaikos, 06/03/77)

The diminutive midfielder is a fans' favourite, combining a combative attitude with pinpoint accuracy from dead-ball situations. He scored the opening goal at Euro 2004 to lead Greece to a famous 2-1 win over Portugal. He came back to haunt the same opponents in March this year, scoring two almost identical free-kicks to inspire Greece to another 2-1 win. He missed the Euro 2004 final after receiving his second booking of the tournament in the semi-final against the Czech Republic. Played in every game of the qualifiers.

VASSILIS TOROSIDIS (Olympiacos, 10/06/85)

A rising star of Greek football, the 23-year-old has forged a place in the national team with a reputation for strength and endurance. He made eight appearances during the qualifiers either at full-back or as a defensive midfielder. He joined Olympiacos in January 2007 but is reportedly the target of bigger teams in Europe with Juventus and Newcastle reported to be interested.

CHRISTOS PATSATZOGLOU (Olympiacos, 19/03/79)

The 29-year-old has been developed into a defensive midfielder for Greece but he can also play at full-back or in central defence. Scored one goal and added three assists during eight games in the qualifiers. Missed Euro 2004 with a recurring Achilles injury which sidelined him on and off for three years.

KOSTAS KATSOURANIS (Benfica, 21/06/79)

The defensive midfielder courted controversy in January when he was suspended by Benfica for an on-field spat with team-mate Luisao. A key member of the Greece team, he started 11 of the 12 qualifiers and only missed the 1-0 away win over Turkey because of suspension.

STELIOS GIANNAKOPOULOS (Bolton, 12/07/74)

The 33-year-old midfielder has only had a bit-part role with Bolton this season and was used mainly as a substitute towards the end of Greece's qualification campaign. He made just one start and three substitute appearances as Greece went unbeaten in their final eight games of the qualifiers. His versatility to play in midfield or as a striker makes him a handy player.

PANAGIOTIS LAGOS (AEK Athens, 18/07/75)

The left-sided player won consecutive Best Young Player awards in the Greek Championship (2005 and 2006). Injury has plagued him since then, ruling him out for a year before his return with AEK in October 2007.

FORWARDS

ANGELOS CHARISTEAS (Nurnberg, 09/02/80) - The 28-year-old striker will be best remembered for his headed goal to win Euro 2004. While not exactly prolific, he scored three times in qualification and remains the key man in Otto Rehhagel's new preference for a three-man forward line because of his ability to provide a target and win headers.

THEOFANIS GEKAS (Bayer Leverkusen, 23/05/80)

Gekas came into the Greece team after Rehhagel opted for a 4-3-3 formation, operating as an attacking wide man. He was Greece's top scorer in the qualifiers with five goals in nine games including his first international hat-trick against Malta. He was the Bundesliga's top scorer in 2007 while he was with Bochum, scoring 20 goals and prompting his move to Leverkusen last summer.

IOANNIS AMANATIDIS (Eintracht Frankfurt, 03/12/81)

The Eintracht Frankfurt captain scored the only goal of the game away to arch-rivals Turkey to secure Greece's place at Euro 2008. He has established himself as the preferred choice for a right-sided attacking player, starting five of Greece's last seven qualifiers in that position.

NIKOS LIBEROPOULOS (AEK Athens, 04/08/75)

The veteran striker filled a 'super sub' role during the qualifiers, coming off the bench for eight of his nine appearances and scoring three times. His contribution was highlighted by his goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to clinch a 2-1 win against Moldova. He has twice been the top marksman in the Greek league (2000 and 2007) and is a three-time winner of the league's best player award (2000, 2006 and 2007).

GEORGIOS SAMARAS (Celtic, 21/02/85)

The 6ft 4in striker suffered from inconsistency after signing for Manchester City for £6million, a record fee for a Greek player in Europe, in January 2006. He found first-team chances limited under new City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and accepted a loan offer from Celtic in January in an attempt to impress ahead of Euro 2008. Before his Greece debut against Belarus in 2006, Samaras revealed he had toyed with the idea of playing for Australia, where his father and grandfather were born.

DIMITRIOS SALPIGIDIS (Panathinaikos, 18/08/81)

The diminutive striker has been a peripheral figure since making his debut in 2005. He started three of his four appearances during the qualifiers without scoring. At the age of 21 he was made captain of former club PAOK Salonika.
