IT was the weekend that delivered up the A-League's 1000th game and there were plenty of on-field performances to celebrate - here's Griffin McMaster's star pick.
Goalkeeper
Liam Reddy – Central Coast Mariners
Was the only goalkeeper on the weekend to record a clean sheet. His attitude since his arrival at the Mariners has been first class. Made a few saves to keep his team in the match.
Defender Left
Josh Rose – Central Coast Mariners
Rarely plays a bad match for the Mariners - very consistent. Not only are his defensive duties sound he’s also keen to get forward and make overlapping runs around Mitch Duke or Michael McGlinchey.
Defender Centre
Trent Sainsbury – Central Coast Mariners
Kept a clean sheet and was a valuable member for his side in the 1-0 victory. Wins a lot of headers and his tackle timing was very good. If he continues this rich vein of form don’t be surprised if overseas scouts start circling.
Defender Centre
Michael Thwaite – Perth Glory
Was a solid performer at central defence. Team did concede two goals however very difficult to pin the errors on Michael. Defended solidly, also scored one to help his team to a 4-2 victory over Wellington Phoenix.
Defender Right
Storm Roux - Central Coast Mariners
Again turns in another solid performance. Forty-nine passes with a 92% completion rate and his marking job on Ali Abbas was very good. An ever-improving player in the A-League.
Defensive Midfielder
Luke Brattan – Brisbane Roar
An improving midfielder who keeps underlining his value each week with solid performances. A total of 52/69 completed passes but also great at creating chances.
Midfield Centre
Aaron Mooy - Western Sydney Wanderers
A very talented player who always plays consistently for Tony Popovic. Scored a decisive goal to keep his team in the match. Was the highest pass completer for attacking passes with 17/25.
Midfield Centre
Ruben Zadkovich - Newcastle Jets
Was solid in the 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory and did a great job in the middle of the park. Had to work hard because Victory had more possession, however, his passing and movement was very sharp.
Attacking Midfield
Nathan Burns - Newcastle Jets
Starting to find his feet back in the A-League and if he continues within this good form he’ll be back overseas. Two quality strikes won the game for the Jets when their backs were up against the wall – full credit to him.
Striker
Besart Berisha - Brisbane Roar
An absolute beauty and the best striker in the league by a fair margin. Has come back from injury improved and hungrier than ever. The biggest contender for this season’s Golden Boot.
Striker
Sidnei - Perth Glory
Demonstrating his worth in the A-League with improving performances. Played his best match against Wellington on Friday night. Opened the scoring and capped it off with the last goal of the match. The Brazilian also played a hand in 35 passes at 86% completion.
