Green Gully's last minute bid to recruit veteran A-League goalkeeper Ante Covic for the FFA Cup has been stymied by Football Federation Australia
It had been reported that the 41 year-old goalkeeper was set to don the gloves for the NPL Victoria side tonight in their clash against Central Coast Mariners while their regular glovesman was suspended for an earlier red card
The suspension had left the club with only reserve keeper Sebastian Mattei and only a 15 year-old goalkeeper from the NPL U-18s eligible, according to Outside 90.
But just minutes before kick off, the FFA blocked the move for the former Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory number one.
Fringe Socceroo Covic was said not to qualify as a guest player, ending Gully's hopes of fielding him between the sticks.
Meanwhile, the Mariners have former Sydney FC keeper Ivan Necevski starting in goal for the blue and yellow tonight as he and Paul Izzo battle it out for the regular starting slot when the A-League season finally begins.
