The A-League new boys have yet to kick a ball in anger but they are already licking their lips at the prospect of a first meeting with Melbourne Victory.

Heart's CEO has reaffirmed the club's intention to engage with Victorian football fans and to increase football fans in the state, not simply pinch a section of an existing club's support.

"We know there are a significant number of hardcore football fans in Victoria and our task is to engage and appeal to them to ensure they join us on this unique journey," Heart CEO Scott Munn told the club's official website.

"We bear a distinct responsibility to advance the cause of football and don't want to cannibalise Victory's support."

While seeking to tread a unique path, the derby with Melbourne Victory will be something special for all football fans according to the Heart CEO.

"The derby with Victory will be fantastic," he said. "If you've ever been to Man United versus Man City or the Boca versus Plate games, that is what we aim, over time to recreate.

'Hopefully it will become a must-have ticket in town."

As for Victory, defender Rody Vargas believes there is room for both clubs to blossom.

"I'm sure our fans will stick with us but I think there is room for another team (in Melbourne and Victoria)," he told au.fourfourtwo.com.

"Derby games are always good and it certainly adds some spice."

Heart are busy recruiting for their inaugural campaign with Jason Hoffman the latest senior recruit.

Other A-League stars continue to be linked with the new franchise including Newcastle's Ljubo Milicevic and Sydney FC's Clint Bolton.
