MELBOURNE Heart coach John van' t Schip says he was disappointed with the football his side produced in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle but pleased they showed fight to grind out the result.
Newcastle dominated proceedings with some neat football but the Heart resolutely held them out, with goalkeeper Clint Bolton impressive, until Jeremy Brockie broke through on 60 minutes.
But the A-League newboys were given a lifeline when Ben Kantarovski's attempted clearance looped over the head of goalkeeper Ben Kennedy and in for an own goal on 79 minutes which earned the Heart a point.
Van 't Schip told Fox Sports after the game he wasn't happy with his side's performance but delighted to claim their first ever A-League point.
"We know we didn't play a good game this evening," he said. "If you compare it to the first game, I think this evening we had a lot of troubles keeping the ball, giving it too easily away and not creating enough.
"We had some good moments and some good chances but I think Newcastle was the better team. But we're happy with the result."
The Dutchman added: "It's not what we'd like to show, but when you struggle you have to fight and think that was a positive thing this evening.
"We showed that we are a team who could fight and stick together and in the end we were a little bit lucky getting that goal, but we were very happy with it."
Heart skipper Simon Colosimo agreed with van 't Schip.
"One thing we showed tonight is we're not going to lay down, if we go a goal down," he said. " I thought that brought the best out of us.
"I don't think many teams will come here and get the full three points. I thought Newcastle were excellent too."
Van 't Schip was also happy with Bolton's performance holding out the Jets.
"That's why we got him," he laughed. "That's his job.
"I'm very happy with Clint and all the boys, they worked very hard."
Australian marquee Josip Skoko was forced out of the game early in the first-half with injury although van 't Schip wasn't sure of the severity of the problem.
"Josip has a problem with his hamstring," he said. "We don't know yet how long he's going to be out."
Van 't Schip, though, conceded Skoko was likely to be unavailable for next round's clash with Adelaide.
He added: "We will have to find a solution. I think we have players who can do that, but maybe together we have to bring more, because Josip is a very important player, tactical he's very strong and technically he's very good.
"So we have to find another solution, but we've got enough time before the game with Adelaide."
