Heffernan had joined the Yorkshire club in the hope of boosting his World Cup chances but it wasn't to be.

He also suffered heartache at club level as Town were beaten by Millwall in the League One play-off semi-final.

"I've had a fantastic time at a really great club," Heffernan told the Huddersfield Examiner.

"It's such a big disappointment that we lost out in the play-offs, but I think the boys will bounce back next season.

"The World Cup didn't work out for me, but I did everything I could to further my chances, and the experience I've gained over here has been excellent."

Heffernan, who will line up against former club Central Coast Mariners in Heart's first A-League clash, is looking forward to his new challenge.

"The Melbourne opportunity is exciting, and the contract there provides me with some security," he added.

"It's a great sporting city, and a wonderful place to live, but I've made some great friends in Huddersfield, and I'll really miss the place."
