EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Heart could announce their name, colours and logo as early as next week but their CEO has expressed frustration that other key club issues are taking longer than expected.
Scott Munn, CEO of the second Melbourne A-League syndicate, hopes to offer fans "an early Christmas present" with the long-awaited news on the team's name, logo and colours.
Heart have submitted their final name to the FFA for approval and the name is currently being lodged by lawyers with the relevant bodies. Although he wasn't about to divulge the name, Munn did concede Heart as a name has stuck even though it's only been a working title.
Melbourne Heart FC was one of four names shortlisted by the syndicate for an online vote that also included Sporting Melbourne FC, Melbourne Revolution and Melburnians.
"I'm really hoping the announcement on logo, name and colours might be an early Christmas present. Certainly in the new year; but hopefully before Christmas," he told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
However, other key areas are yet to be signed off - and Munn is frustrated it's taking longer than he expected.
"If I was to rate the year, as a football department we've had a 7/10 year," he said. "For admin, probably a 5/10.
"I was hoping to have finalised our stadium deal before Christmas and, secondly, I really had hoped to have locked away our training and admin base.
"It's certainly a goal for me to have those locked away in January."
Munn, speaking with this website in October, targeted Christmas as the time for these key structures to be in place.
But he added: "We feel we're putting in building blocks that will see this club be around in another 100 years."
The options for training bases include universities (similar to Sydney FC) as well as local council facilities. Munn wants the training and admin in one location.
"We're one team on and off the field," he stressed.
And with a team already boasting its coaching team lead by former Ajax assistant coach John van't Schip and players such as Matt Thompson (Jets), Dean Heffernan (Mariners) and Clint Bolton (Sydney FC), the Heart CEO has made a clear pitch to fans who want to watch A-League football in a football-friendly rectangular stadium.
Heart will aim to launch their supporter memberships by February and say they now have an obvious point of difference between them and cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory.
The new club is set to play all their home games at the 31,000-capacity Swans St rectangular stadium (nicknamed "Bubble Dome"). By contrast, Melbourne Victory will play some of their bigger games back at Etihad Stadium - a point that's riled some Victory fans.
"We feel being able to offer our fans one seat for every game at the same venue is a really unique situation," said Munn.
"We see it as being our home. We're the only club in the A-League playing every game there and hopefully our fans will embrace it.
"It's our territory."
