MELBOURNE Heart coach John Van't Schip has returned from a European scouting mission with strikers on his radar – but Heart's mystery men won’t touch down till at least July.
The former Ajax Amsterdam assistant coach travelled to his home country Holland as well as Spain over Christmas and January and he told the club's website visa spots would be largely used for foreign striking talent - though no names were revealed.
"For the moment, we will be looking for the players upfront. That's where our focus is, looking for players we feel can bring a little bit extra, and that is the main thing we were looking for abroad in Europe," he said.
Heart have already signed Australian players, including talented left-sided defender Dean Heffernan from Central Coast, versatile Jet Matt Thompson and creative Reds midfielder Kristian Sarkies.
The new A-League club, set to launch next season, have also signed two young Aussie strikers in AIS starlet Kamal Ibrahim and Jason Hoffman also from the Jets.
Van't Schip added that the players he's scouted are likely to remain undecided until the end of the European season in June and July. This would be around three months after the club commences its first pre-season training session set for early April.
"At the end of the European season ... the players will know more about the situations at their actual clubs and the possibility of re-signing. If the situation is clearer, they can make a decision to come or to say, 'No, I would like to stay because I have another opportunity in Europe'."
He added: "There are a lot of players also who are at a certain level or certain period in their career that are open to listen and think about coming to Australia."
Heart is set to launch its much anticipated club name, logo and colours in the coming week following the conclusion of the Australian Open tennis in Melbourne.
The announcement is understood to have been delayed by the threat of legal action from AFL club Melbourne Footbal Club if Heart's new name included the words Melbourne, Football or Club.
