The Dutchman suffered the injury in the club's pre-season friendly against Brisbane in Lismore, which the Roar won 3-0.

The injury happened when Engelaar went into a challenge with Roar star Thomas Broich inside the first 30 minutes of the match.

Both players stayed down, but while Broich was able to play on, Engelaar was carried off and taken straight to hospital.

Heart officials later tweeted they were hopeful the injury is just bad bruising but it seems like the 34-year-old has suffered a fracture.

It compounded a miserable day for John Aloisi's side, who were ripped apart by a Besart Berisha-inspired Roar.

The Albanian finished with a hat-trick, including the opener inside the first 20 seconds.

Berisha added two more after the break to complete the scoring.
