With coach Markus Babbel adjusting to a three at the back formation, the 24-year old former attacking winger has had to quickly learn the tricks and trade of playing as a defensive wing-back.

The ex-Melbourne City man says that although he still prefers playing as winger, he’s enjoying the move back to go forward – even if it’s not from as advanced a position as he’s used to.

“In the system we’re playing right now, with the three at the back and the wing-backs, I still get to go forward and I’m still able to attack which is a positive,” he told FTBL.

Pre-season signs have been promising. He opened the scoring in the Wanderers’ 7-1 shellacking against Sydney United in the FFA Cup and looked a danger going forward.

The complications have been on the other end, and he’s still learning how to manage those defensive responsibilities with his natural instinct to attack.

“The positioning where to be without the ball and even sometimes with the ball," he admitted. "Trying to find that balance between not being too high and not being too low..."

Kamau played as right wing-back in their 3-0 defeat to Melbourne City in the FFA Cup quarter-finals but believes that it was just a bump in the road and didn't reflect their performance in the match.

“I think we were still pretty good in that game and we had our chances," he said. "Obviously, we had our injuries but we have a big squad and the players that came in know their roles and know what they need to do.
