EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Victory's opponents tonight have an opportunity to impress with at least one young recruit still being sought for Ernie Merrick's senior squad.
Melbourne Victory will play a combined Victorian Premier League (VPL) Men's team in a Football Federation Victoria Bushfire Appeal Match at Olympic Park Stadium.
The one-off charity match has been coordinated by Football Federation Victoria, in conjunction with Melbourne Victory and Melbourne and Olympic Park Trust, with all proceeds to go to Victorian Bushfire affected families and communities.
It's a first chance for supporters to see the current A-League champions in action but Ernie Merrick and Football Operations Manager Gary Cole will be looking for potential recruits in the opposition line up.
"It's a fantastic cause and we're happy to be playing our part," Cole told au.fourfourtwo.com today.
On the football side, Cole admits the game is a terrific way to examine the cream of the VPL, a competition he has the highest regard for.
"It's a nice way to see the best players and both Ernie (Merrick) and I will be in the stands watching while Aaron (Healey) takes the team from the touchline," he said.
"We're still in the process of looking for players for the National Youth Team and I think there's at least one young player (for the senior squad)."
The night will kick-off with a celebrity match starting at 6pm. Some of the confirmed players include: Victorian Minister for Sport James Merlino, former Hawthorn players Shane Crawford, Ben Dixon and Joel Smith, NOVA'S Ed Kavalee and Poker star Tony Hachem.
Melbourne Victory will then go head-to-head with the VPL select team at 7.30pm, in its first game since winning the 2008/09 Hyundai A-League Championship.
Entry is $15 for adults, $10 concession and $5 for children under 14 years old. Kids under four years old are free.
