Coach Graham Arnold does not have a wealth of left-sided options and the coach has already revealed that Carney will be used in an attacking role.

But Topor-Stanley is almost certain to fill the left-back role and he's looking forward to developing a good understanding with the Sheffield United man.

The Perth Glory defender, known to fans as Hyphen but called Ghandi by teammates, told au.fourfourtwo.com: "David is there in the Socceroos now and has shown what he can do at the top level.

"He's going to be invaluable to us in both an attacking and defending sense.

"If I get to play left-back and he's a bit further forward then I'm sure we can link up well. I've played with him before so I know his game a little bit and that obviously helps."

Carney will be absent for tomorrow's game against New Zealand's Olympic team at North Sydney Oval but Topor-Stanley believes it will be a useful exercise for Arnold's side.

He said: "It'll be a good warm up game for us and with New Zealand going to the Olympics as well I'm sure they'll be looking for a good match and be decent opposition.

"An Australia versus New Zealand final in Beijing would be a bit of a twist wouldn't it?"

Coach Graham Arnold said: "Since the retirement of Tony Vidmar, Danny Tiatto, Stan Lazaridis and the unavailability of Scott Chipperfield, we've lacked left-sided players with the senior teams and the junior teams.

"When you look right through the whole A-League, of Australian players there's one left-footer and that's Nikolai Topor-Stanley.

"David Carney we tried to turn into a left wing-back at the Asian Cup because of the lack of left-sided players and he adapted very well to that.

"But I think I'll be playing him much higher up the field (in Beijing) because I think he can add his experience, he can score goals and make goals as well."
