Olympic extend their lead at the top of the table to four, FNQ Bulls secure their second win of the season, Razorbacks hold on to fourth spot and Queensland Academy of Sport beat Sunshine Coast FC at home, while Redlands City Devils prevailed 3-0 over Capricorn Cougars.
After conceding a first-half goal from Bundaberg youngster Matt Timbrell, NQ Razorbacks put the pressure on their opponents and came from behind to win 2-1. Ramone Close's first goal for the Club following his off season move from Redlands City Devils and a late strike from Josh Searle sealed the win for the Townsville side.
Olympic FC overcame a determined Brisbane Strikers outfit in a fiery encounter at Perry Park on Saturday night. Despite the first half being uneventful for its majority, Strikers scored when it counted when Warren Moon hit the back of the net just before the break. Olympic retaliated and it only took them five minutes after the restart to equalise through Shane Coffey. Adam Webber scored to give the home side the lead once more, before a tackle in the box resulted in a second yellow for Strikers captain Matt Smith and a subsequent penalty was coolly slotted home by Coffey. With the numerical advantage, Olympic kept pushing their cross-town rivals and eventually got their reward when defender Cameron Saint headed home the winner in the 73rd minute.
FNQ Bulls secured their second win of the competition, beating Whitsunday Miners 5-1 at home. A Blake Cremer double and single goals from Alex Plowman, Dennis Allen were enough to overcome the Whitsunday side who have only won once this season. The Miners' sole goal came from
Daniel Scotton in the 78th minute.
Two wonder goals from QAS's Mitch Bevan and Tyler Thurtell were enough to hold off the advances of Sunshine Coast FC and give them another vital three points in the Hyundai QSL. Bevan opened the scoring with an impressive left-footed shot that found the top corner, before Sunshine Coast midfielder Leon Dwyer hit back with his first goal of the season ten minutes later. Tyler Thurtell scored a spectacular goal from the tightest of angles, setting up a duel between third and fourth on the ladder next weekend when QAS travel to Townsville to play the Razorbacks.
Redlands City Devils kept pace on fourth place and recorded their fourth win of the campaign when they scored three times against Capricorn Cougars on Saturday night. Cougars went down to ten men after just twenty minutes after defender Dylan Kussrow was deemed to be the last man when he took down Russell Woodruffe, and the Devils were able to capitalise on their numerical advantage. Danny Byrne, Russell Woodruffe and Graham Fyfe were all on the scoresheet.
