Former Western Sydney Wanderers, Melbourne Heart and Gold Coast United forward Golgol Mebrahtu has enjoyed a breakout 2017-18 season with Czech club Mlada Boleslav having joined the outfit in mid-2016.

Mebrahtu has netted six goals in the Czech Liga this term to be ahead of the likes of ex-Liverpool striker Milan Baros on the scoring charts.

The Brisbane-raised 27-year-old also netted three goals in Europe to have nine for the campaign, following up his return of 10 goals in all competitions last season.

Mebrahtu’s form hasn’t led to any direct approach from the Socceroos, who for now are focused on trying to overcome Honduras in their 2018 World Cup intercontinental playoff, but he doesn’t appear to be far off.

“Indirectly I’ve had quite a few people mention that I’m in and around there,” Mebrahtu told FourFourTwo.

“I don’t know how much into it I look. That’s every player’s dream. It’d be an honour to represent my country but I’m focused on here and now with my club.

“I’m sure if I keep performing sometime down the line it’ll happen.”

The Sudan-born forward is out of contract at the end of this season and his form is sure to have caught the eye of other potential suitors.

“I definitely want to see where it’ll take me here in Europe,” he said.

“I’m really focused on the now. I’m keeping my head grounded.

“I know if I do what I can now and make the most of it, everything else will take care of itself.”

Mebrahtu made 63 A-League appearances with three different clubs but only managed five goals.

He said a key factor in his success at Mlada Boleslav was that he was being played in his preferred position.

“One of the things that has helped is I’m playing in my preferred position as a central striker,” he said.

“They think that’s my best position and that’s my preferred position. I’m enjoying myself learning my trade and very hungry to keep improving.

“The coach, the club and my teammates have had that belief in me. They believe in my talent and character. I want to repay that faith and keep scoring goals.”

As for sitting in the top echelon of goal scorers in the Czech Liga, Mebrahtu said it was a nice accolade but he wasn’t settling.

“It’s fantastic, I’m happy with my season so far,” he said.

“I know I’ve got a lot to improve on. I’m very hungry to score more goals. Statistically it’s been an improvement on my season last year.

“I just want to keep getting better and better, hopefully that’ll lead to bigger and better things in my career.”
