Andres Iniesta has reiterated his commitment to Barcelona amid suggestions of a possible swoop by Real Madrid for the Spain midfielder.
Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Thursday that Iniesta could be a possible target for Real, who are believed to be in the market for a playmaker having failed in their bid to bring Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas to the Bernabeu.
However, Real have since released a statement denying they been in contact with Iniesta or that they have any intention of paying the 60million euros buy-out clause in the 23-year-old's contract as suggested in the media.
Barca president Joan Laporta has also declared that Iniesta is not for sale, while the player himself admits the news has come as a shock to him.
"I am very surprised," the Spain international said on his club's website.
"You cannot do anything about that but I want to say again that my wish has always been to remain here.
"When I said that I want to retire at Barca I said it from the heart," added Iniesta, who has been given the number eight shirt at Barca following the departure of Ludovic Giuly to Roma.
"I have always liked the number eight shirt and I have worn it on several occasions in the reserve sides at the club and with the Spanish team," said Iniesta, who wore the number 24 last season.
"It hurts a little to leave the number 24 but it is a dream to do well in the number eight shirt.
"Now I have been given the chance with the departure of Giuly, for whom I wish the best of luck in his new life in Italy."
