Spain dominated possession, linking up beautifully and getting the ball forward quickly. But, Iran's defence was packed and frustrated their opponents, who couldn't find a way to break through.

Spain continued to work their way through the red maze and looked stronger in the second half, conjuring up as many shots as they did in the previous half.

They were rewarded through Diego Costa, who opened the scoring courtesy of Andres Iniesta's hard work.

Saied Ezatolahi thought he'd equalised midway through the second half but, to Spain's relief, the goal was chalked off for offside.

A few more chances followed but luck was not on Iran's side.

Iran

Alireza Beiranvand (GK) - 7

Held up well to make several saves. Made a terrific double save at the start of the second period.

Ehsan Haji Safi - 7

Defended well in what appeared to be a 6-2-2 formation but pressed hard.

Ramin Rezaeian - 6.5

Well-organised and regularly got behind the ball. Made breaks in the second half to try and create chances.

Majid Hosseini - 7

Great defening and press early on.

Morteza Pourlaliganji - 6.5

Denied Spain and got his body in the way.

Saied Ezatolahi - 7.5

Shifted in sync with the defence and threw his body in the way. Put the ball into the back of the net but the equaliser was disallowed after Iran erupted in celebration.
