Doyle can perhaps count himself lucky he was not part of the side involved in the most embarrassing reverse in Ireland's history a year ago.

The 24-year-old was sidelined with an ankle injury the night last October when Ireland suffered a humiliating 5-2 defeat to Cyprus, effectively killing off their qualifying hopes for the Euro 2008 finals at an early stage.

But now he is eager to play his part in making amends, and proving the nightmare in Nicosia was a one-off setback.

And following on from Saturday's goalless draw with Germany at Croke Park in Dublin, Doyle knows standards cannot be allowed to slip.

"I think it says a lot about us that we're disappointed to have only drawn with Germany," reflected Doyle.

"To dominate the game and be unluky not to score, that's a good sign.

"But any chance of second place in the group has gone now, so to finish third would be good.

"First up, we need to set the record straight against Cyprus. What happened over there was very disappointing.

"It would be great to finish this campaign with two wins against Cyprus and Wales.

"That's certainly what we'll be aiming to do, starting Wednesday."

Captain Robbie Keane, who led the line at the GSP Stadium, is also gunning to avenge the Cypriot debacle.

"We're looking forward to the game with Cyprus because we remember what they did to us a year ago," stated Keane.

"Towards the end of the game they were showboating a little bit, so we're looking to getting our revenge on them."

Doyle's Reading team-mate Shane Long is out with a groin strain, while John O'Shea continues to remain a doubt with a leg injury, although he yesterday worked out in the gym.

Darren Potter stepped up his fitness with a light training session as he looks to overcome a groin problem.

Boss Steve Staunton, though, is without two key players in centre-back Richard Dunne and midfielder Lee Carsley through suspension as both collected their second bookings of the tournament against the Germans.

Paul McShane returns from his own one-match ban to replace Dunne, while Liam Miller is likely to be given the nod to fill in for Carsley.
