The AC Milan forward found the net in the 13th minute before grabbing his second shortly after the re-start.

The Italians, who needed a victory to get back in touch with leaders France, were clearly superior on the pitch against a side that remain winless in qualifying.

However, the world champions squandered many chances and were made to sweat after Rogvi Jacobsen reduced the deficit with 13 minutes left to play.

Inzaghi, as expected, took injured Luca Toni´s place in attack and the veteran forward yet again showed his fine form in front of goal, having scored twice for Milan in the Champions League final against Liverpool 10 days ago.

Italy started strongly and Inzaghi soon broke the deadlock. He brought down a high ball inside the box with his right foot before shooting just inside the far post with his left to beat goalkeeper Jakup Mikkelsen.

At the other end, Tommaso Rocchi lobbed the ball over the keeper but it went just high over the crossbar.

After 25 minutes, Italy almost extended their lead with Massimo Oddo´s cross finding Inzaghi at the far post but his flying header went wide.

Italy´s superiority was overwhelming and the Faroe Island`s failure to mount a single attack lulled Roberto Donadoni´s men into a quiet spell until Alessandro Del Piero´s 34th minute free-kick just fizzed wide of the target.

The Azzurri finally doubled their advantage early in the second half with Inzaghi scoring his 25th goal in the national team colours.

Aimo Diana´s cross served Inzaghi at the far post and the AC Milan man's header beat Mikkelsen.

Shortly after, Andrea Pirlo warmed the hands of Mikkelsen with a stinging free-kick.

After 77 minutes, Rogvi Jacobsen brought the Torsvollur Stadium to life after latching onto a corner to head past goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

The hosts pressed forward and almost levelled the score with seconds remaining, but Buffon did well to save substitute Christian Holst´s effort and deny the hosts their first point in qualifying.
