JUST four weeks into the new campaign, 'wee fat bloke' Charlie Miller is proving to be one of the shrewdest signings of the season.
Now supporters are hailing the Scotsman’s tremendous early impact on the A-League as the potential the make or break factor for Queensland Roar’s season.
Eyebrows were raised when Frank Farina captured the former Rangers man and Miller has had to endure sneers about his weight since joining the club.
Miller didn’t sneak under the import radar but neither was he being dazzled by the media spotlight ahead of the big kick-off.
However, four goals in the first four rounds of the new season have quickly won over many sceptics and the Roar fans are rapidly hailing goal magnet Miller as their new cult hero.
Queensland Roar Supporters Club ex president Pat Lindsay was one of 12 away fans at Members Equity Stadium yesterday and he said Miller’s contribution could not be emphasised enough.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: “I think people like myself who applauded Frank for the signing were few and far between a few weeks ago.
“That’s changing now and if he continues the way he’s started then the fans are just going to love this bloke.
“He just brings so much quality and experience to the side. It’s not like he’s moving all over the pitch but he’s just there when it counts.
“It’s only four games in but I think this bloke is so, so important. Him being in there and continuing to do what he’s doing is vital. It could make or break our season I reckon.”
Mr Lindsay said the supporters were already serenading Miller with some humerous songs about his so-called weight issues and that fans were warming to the Scotsman’s level-headed approach.
He said: “I think he has that same kind of attitude and background as people like Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto. They’ve been there and done it haven’t they? They’re not going to let things get to them.”
Miller’s latest goal put the seal on a very happy away day for Roar and made a very, very long away day worthwhile for Mr Lindsay and his fellow fans.
He said: “It was a great result but the Perth fans weren’t too happy in the second half.”
