Brendon Santalab’s superb first-half goal snapped the Sky Blues’ 19-game undefeated streak and sealed Western Sydney’s first derby success since January 2014.

Sydney FC started brightest but it was Wanderers who wrested the lead inside half an hour as Santalab, restored to the starting XI, proved a point with a delightful turn and finish.

The flashpoint came in the second-half when Sydney's Brandon O'Neill was poleaxed by Kearyn Baccus sparking a melee.

And the tension continued as Tony Popovic’s men inched towards their biggest result of the season.

Goalkeepers Danny Vukovic and Vedran Janjetovic both produced fine saves to heighten the drama while the league leaders were denied a stoppage time penalty when skipper Alex Brosque was brought down in the box by Robbie Cornthwaite.

Sydney lay siege to the Wanderers goal but couldn't break the deadlock.

The result brings the Sky Blues' historic run to an end after 20 rounds but leaves them 11 points clear at the top of the table, while the Wanderers consolidate their position in sixth spot.
