ATTACKING weapon James Brown is looking to terrorise more defences this season after producing a scintillating display in Gold Coast United's win over North Queensland Fury.
The youngster’s artistry fashioned the first goal for Adama Traore and Brown was a constant threat to the home backline as his skipped past his markers time and time again.
Blessed with skill, pace and balance, the 20-year-old is now building the confidence he needs to establish himself as one of the leading young players in the country.
The touch and burst of speed that left Fury defender Mark Hughes for dead as he set up Gold Coast’s first goal gave Brown the belief he needed to be a thorn in Fury’s side for the remainder of the contest.
“I felt pretty comfortable out there and thought I made a few good runs, put a few good balls in and I was delighted to come up with the assist for the first goal,” he said.
“My first touch really set me up and gave me the time to look up and see Adama (Traore) in the box, so I was really pleased when he put it away.
“Confidence is very important for every player and being out on the pitch with the likes of Jason Culina, Joel Porter and all our players gives me confidence that I’m up to the standard as well.
“I obviously want to play as much as possible and hopefully I can press my claims for a starting spot if I can be consistent with my performances and play like I did against the Fury.
“Having said that I’m happy if I’m involved - whether that’s from the bench or in the starting eleven. It’s so competitive here because we have so many good players that you have to train and play very well all the time. Whatever I have to do to help the team, I’ll do.”
With a knack of sneaking into good positions Brown is hoping to come up with his fair share of goals during the campaign, but says he is just as happy to be setting up his teammates for glory.
Having already netted once this term, a headed goal against Wellington Phoenix in round nine, he’d like nothing more than to double his tally in this Saturday’s tough away fixture against Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium.
“I’d love to bang in a few more goals myself and will keep working on that, but in the meantime if I can help out with a few more assists I’ll feel like I’m making a good contribution to the team,” Brown said.
“We are going well at the moment and we’ll head down to Melbourne this weekend full of confidence and looking for a win.
"We’ve been picking up points everywhere we’ve gone recently, so hopefully we can continue doing that this week."
