JAPAN rounded off their preparations for their World Cup opener against Cameroon on Monday with a goalless draw with Zimbabwe in a hastily arranged training game today.
Keisuke Honda started as the lone striker for the Blue Samurai but their goalscoring woes continued as they failed to really trouble their opponents throughout, with Yuki Abe's 21st-minute effort the best they could muster.
"We were able to have a workout against a good opponent and we have come through the match without picking up any injuries. Ideally though we would like to be scoring goals in today's match as well as at the finals," coach Takeshi Okada said on Kyodo News.
The lack of goalscoring threat will no doubt be a major concern for Okada as they had hoped to head into their Group E opener on the back of a positive performance against Zimbabwe following four successive defeats.
There was brighter news on the injury front, however, as Okada hinted Yasuyuki Konno could be fit for the game against Cameroon.
The FC Tokyo defender injured his knee in last Friday's 2-0 friendly defeat by the Ivory Coast in Switzerland and was not expected to be fit until the second group game against Holland on June 19.
However, Konno completed a full training session yesterday without any problems and Okada is optimistic he will be fit to face Cameroon in Bloemfontein.
"He's doing ever so well and we figured he could take part (in training) with a painkilling injection," he added.
''There is a possibility he could play (against Cameroon)."
