Japan came from behind to claim a 3-1 win over Sweden in Monchengladbach and book their first ever appearance in a World Cup final, where they will face the United States.
Josefine Oqvist's deflected strike gave Sweden the lead in the 10th minute, but Nahomi Kawasumi levelled nine minutes later.
Japan captain Homare Sawa headed her side into the lead on the hour mark and Kawasumi completed the scoring with a fine lob four minutes later.
The United States withstood a barrage of pressure from France in Frankfurt to claim a 3-1 win and their third appearance in a World Cup final.
America, champions in 1991 and 1999, were ahead in the ninth minute courtesy of Lauren Cheney, but were second best for long periods and were pegged back by Sonia Bompastor 10 minutes after the break.
But Abby Wambach bagged her 12th World Cup goal and substitute Alex Morgan also netted to ensure the Americans progressed.
America and Japan will face off in Frankfurt on Sunday, with Sweden and France contesting the third-place play-off in Sinsheim the day before.
