Jermain Jenas admitted Tottenham "shot themselves in the foot" as their UEFA Cup dream came crashing down at White Hart Lane tonight.
Spurs lost 4-3 on aggregate to holders Sevilla after a 2-2 draw on the night, and they were always struggling after conceding two early goals before Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon gave them hope with two in less than two minutes after the break.
"I think we've probably gone and shot ourselves in the foot a little bit," Jenas told ITV1.
"First half has done it for us.
"Second half we've come out and shown some character and what we're really about and what we should have set ourselves out to do in the first place.
"I don't think it was nerves. All the lads were up for the game.
"There's some sloppy defending on all parts that's cost us in the end."
Jenas believes Spurs may "possibly" have been knocked out by the eventual winners and set his sights on a return to the competition next season.
"They're the holders. They've come here and done a job and they've come through," he said.
"All the lads have thoroughly enjoyed the journey, the fans have enjoyed it and we've got to make sure we're back in it again and go further next year."
Spurs boss Martin Jol admitted his side were "shocked" by Sevilla's start.
"They rocked us, they shocked us," he said.
"They're a good team. They were the team of the year last year but I still feel we would've had a bigger chances if we don't give away goals like we did for the first one.
"We tend to give away this season cheap goals.
Jol still had belief Spurs could come back after watching Middlesbrough perform a similar feat in the competition last year.
"At half-time we said we have to go out with pride," he said.
"It could have been a Middlesbrough story.
"The second half we won, we beat them 2-0. We still should've scored the third one.
"We went out of it with our heads held high."
