NEWCASTLE defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley labelled the crucial stoppage-time chance he fluffed over the bar as the 'miss of the century' after the 1-1 home draw with Sydney FC on Sunday.
In a game where both sides needed to win to keep alive their finals hopes, there was late drama as the game finished frenetically.
Bruno Cazarine had put Sydney ahead on 77 minutes but Saso Petrovski levelled on 85 minutes, before Topor-Stanley's late chance.
"It was miss of the century, I think," Topor-Stanley told FoxSports after the game. "I was trying to get my body in the way and it's come off my knee, things like that happen, but it's funny it always happens to us."
Topor-Stanley added: "I think we were pretty guilty of missing a few chances tonight. That's the story of our season really. We tried to hold them out as much as possible, but it wasn't to be."
Jets coach Branko Culina bemoaned his side's failure to take their chances throughout the contest.
"We certainly had our opportunities in the last 10 minutes but we probably had even better chances in the 15-20 minutes when we really had control of the game," Culina said.
"We should and could have been a couple of goals ahead. Credit to Sydney, they fought back in the second-half and scored, and looked like they might have got all three points."
But Culina was full of praise for his under-manned side who he said have been short of luck this season.
"I thought they were fantastic and they have been for the most part," Culina said.
"What people don't understand is we've got about 12 players missing and Sydney was almost at full-strength.
"I've been enormously pleased with what they've been putting in but unfortunately we just haven't had much luck as well.
"I don't know how many posts we've hit and how close we got, but when you're not quite on top of your game you do need to take the chances you do create and for us, unfortunately, the ball just wouldn't go in."
Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka was disappointed his side's finals hopes had evaporated but said the new target was their upcoming Asian Champions League (ACL) campaign.
"We're all disappointed because we chased the chance to reach the finals today," Lavicka said.
"I think it was a pretty good game tonight because both sides wanted to win. The game was open, we created some chances, the home team as well.
"I'm only disappointed because we scored the goal 10 minutes before the end, after that we created a couple of chances to punish them and score a second one, but the Jets are a strong team and punished us a few minutes before the end."
Lavicka added about the ACL: "I spoke about it before, we still have the chance to reach the final, not now. Every single A-League game is preparation before the ACL. We still have a target, a season goal and we'll just keep going."
