Two goals from Craig Goodwin saw the Newcastle Jets claim a 2-1 victory over the Central Coast Mariners in an A-league pre-season game in Tamworth, New South Wales on Sunday.
Goodwin scored twice in quick succession before a Brent Griffiths effort pegged one back for the Mariners. The Jets defence then held firm to ensure a victory for Gary van Egmond's side.
Newcastle made the most of a depleted Mariners outfit, with the Central Coast having to split their squad due to the club still competing in Indonesia for the Menpora cup.
Goodwin opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a right-footed half-volley that flew into the back of the net.
It took just four minutes for Goodwin to strike again, this time with a diving header that saw Mariners keeper Liam Reddy beaten for a second time.
Michael McClinchey was the most dangerous Mariner in the second half. After coming close with a shot of his own, a McClinchey corner set up Griffiths in the 65th minute and brought the game back to 2-1.
That was where the score would stay, however, with some solid defensive efforts from Newcastle defender Taylor Regan ensuring the Jets would emerge victorious from the game.
Despite the loss, Mariners coach Graham Arnold said the club would benefit from the scheduling clash that saw the squad weakened for the game.
"Obviously we have half of our squad still in Indonesia, so for us it was an opportunity to give all our boys 90 minutes before the first game of the season against Western Sydney Wanderers," he said.
"It was a great hit-out and we now have 21 players who have played a full 90 minutes against quality opposition before our first match."
